Whew, one of the most awesomely self-descriptive band names to come out in a long time. Bonecloud's brand of shimmering drone puddles are both transparently effusive and still very tethered to a natural wave of drone. Merging deep muted rumbles with ethereal disembodied voices that lull like the blurred song of a multitude of lost souls; the collective have made a name over the course of quite a few short release CD-r's. Though that's certainly on the lighter side of things as far as
Teenage Lycanthropy is concerned. Bonecloud turn their nimbus dronescapes to steam as they plunge to the Earth's core on the rumbler "Sea Cave" then jettison back into formless space to round out the whole of the disc tapping the sympathetic tone of the isosphere. Another in a long line of great releases from Ireland's Leaf Trail records and again showcasing the trademark large-form artwork collage's that make this CD-r label one to watch.

A few years ago Earth resurrected on a quest to find the drone elements in country and Western trappings. The resulting album,
Hex is in my opinion the best thing the band has ever done, achieving a tenuous balance between heavy drone and the lonesome whine of steel strings. Since then the band has continued to bask in their Western Muse, and with excellent results. On their latest,
The Bees Made Honey in the Lion's Skull, they've found themselves standing in the same desolate crossroads that Grails tread upon last year, feverishly quavering in the heat of Moriconne's ghosts. The album is a far cry from what the band started out as and, the Earth purists will surely cry failure, but those purists should have long ago moved on to donning their Sunn o))) robes and buried the past. The band has moved far beyond their roots and into brave new territory far from the thunder of drones and while quite honestly I'll always have a soft spot for that weird little bit of
Hex in the transition I think that honestly the progression was all for the best.

One of the first really great releases I've heard this year actually came out at the tail end of last year but who's really counting anyway. The duo of S. Herbert and M.A Welsh has created a thoughtful, subtle folk-pop album that seems almost impossibly perfect. While,
Where has it gone, all the beautiful music of our grandparents? It died with them, that's where it went... is really Misophone's first proper, label released album, it is in fact the duo's 13th collaborative recording to date. Playing on a coy sense of innocence mixed with Herbert's talents as a multi-instrumentalist, the album is really more orchestrated and dense than it seems on first listen; but the gentle ease with which Misophone deliver its 12 tracks makes it seem wholly effortless. The band even throw in a great Daniel Johnston cover and lending it's playfully heartfelt charm to his song is a perfect fit.
Where Has It Gone... sits in great company on Sweden's Kning Disc, alongside Voice of the Seven Woods, Bird By Snow and The Skull Defekts. Seriously, pick it up now!

Not too long after participating in The Social Registry's social club 7" series, Sian Alice Group lay their full length LP,
59.59 on us and surpass the expectations that have since been building. Though the group has quite a few pedigrees that surround them; adding Douglas Hart of Jesus and Mary Chain to their ranks and collaborating with members of Spiritualized and Gang Gang Dance, these don't really give any indication of the sound. The band's sound doesn't really bring to mind any of these collaborators. Built on a basis of spacy synths and plaintive almost crooning female vocals, the songs move from glassy calmness to propulsive yet extremely controlled rhythms and terse shards of guitar. And though the songs may seem a bit dissimilar, the album flows, tied together with the constant power of singer Sian Ahern's vocals and the natural prowess of the compiled players. Keep an ear out for this when it becomes available February 19th.
