Hey Jesus Christ Welcome to this World (1971)
December 20, 2007
Here’s one of those fascinating only-in-America products of low budgets and high hopes – a local congregation’s rock oratorio on the birth of Christ, hereby presented in all its cheesy inept garage band glory. A cast of Joseph, Mary, the innkeeper, shepherds and two women sing through titles like ‘Goin’ To Bethlehem’, ‘No Room For You’, ‘Could I Be Wrong’, ‘The Lady Had A Baby’, ‘You’ll Hear ‘Bout My Babe’, ‘Fear I Feel’, and ‘Welcome Jesus’, while a basic rock band stumbles along. The crude electric guitar is the main draw here – several nice solos including some with rough psychy wah-wah effects. Piano, bass and drums fill out the sound which sometimes has a jazz or blues rock edge. The Joseph character’s voice is so clashingly over-dramatic it’s comical! Lyric booklet included. Written by D. LeMieux and Jeanne Peters. Countryside Unitarian Fellowship on Chicago-based custom label. (Ken Scott - Archivist)
